New York City Rodent Removal Tip:

Are rats able to dream?
Rats are warm-blooded critters that have lived in the shadows of humans for centuries. Human dwellings provide abundant support for the critters, and the critters could be said to have similar features to humans. In this article, we consider whether the critters dream just like humans.

Scientists have executed studies to investigate whether rats can dream and what they dream about. Let's consider the findings of the studies.

Rats and humans have neurons known as place cells. The place cells are for the storage of memory. Place cells store memories about locations and form mental maps. After rats explore an area, the place maps could create maps of those areas and replay them while the rat is asleep. The knowledge of the presence of place cells in rat brains and the ability of the cells to create mental maps that they replay while the rat is asleep inspired scientists to investigate whether rats can dream about the future.

The study to investigate whether rats dream about future occurrences was carried out in a maze-like structure. Within the structure, the test critters could see their food but were restricted from accessing it. The critters were placed in a structure with a T-junction. Access was restricted from both the junction and the left and right arms with a transparent barrier, and food was placed in one of the arms. Thus, the test critters could only observe the structure and the position of the food. They were then allowed to sleep.

After the rats woke up, they were put into the structure without the barrier to the junction and the arms. They went for the food based on patterns that have been relayed in their brain as they slept. The scientists studied the activity of the place cells which showed that those responsible for the path to the arm where the food was placed were more active than those of the other arm.

The study is the closest experts have gotten in understanding whether rats can dream. Although one cannot explicitly infer that rats can dream, the study had findings that indicate that rats can pre-plan activities while they sleep. This pattern of place cell activities is only related to the desires of the rats. The cells will not fire for random activities. The critters will not "focus" on random activities when they sleep but on strong desires.

Further studies are required to further understand rats' ability to dream. Research has not established whether rats can dream. However, there is sufficient evidence that the critters are sneaky and smart.

Rats have developed lifestyle patterns that have helped them survive living around humans for centuries. For example, the critters understand that humans apply poisoning in getting rid of them. To protect themselves from poisoning, they only nibble on foreign food material at first to confirm that they are safe. After they nibble on the material and confirm its safety, they then consume it whole.

The critters also understand staying out of sight to survive staying around humans. They stick to hidden secluded areas. They are also more active at night. While humans are more active during the day, rats choose to be active at night, a pattern that could be adapted towards avoiding unnecessary interactions with humans.

Rats constantly seek human environments to infest and will quickly establish entry points and identify easy means of transportation within secluded paths. Rats may not be able to dream but they can definitely focus on ways of assessing needs as indicated by the studies highlighted above.
